Car head unit installation

Why Change the Head Unit?

The car is a 2012 Toyota Yaris. The original head unit is outdated and non-functional. Additionally, the car needs a reverse camera. Although this is a small city car, a reverse camera can greatly assist female drivers when reversing.

How to Install in the Car?

The installation process can be divided into two steps:

  1. Installing the head unit
  2. Installing the reverse camera, including the installation of data and power wires to connect the camera with the head unit.

New Head Unit Configuration

The new head unit runs on the Android 13 platform, featuring:

  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB flash storage
  • ARM Cortex-A53 CPU
  • PowerVR Rogue GE8300 GPU
  • 7-inch screen

Yaris Wire Connection

The car has four plugs:

  1. Power plug
  2. Speaker plug
  3. Radio antenna plug
  4. Steering wheel control plug

The new head unit needs to have corresponding plugs to connect with these.

New Head Unit Wires and Plugs

The new unit has five plugs:

  • Two black plugs for power and data connection
  • Radio connector
  • Reverse wire for connecting the head unit

Reverse Camera Connection and Installation Position

The reverse camera needs to be connected to the power supply via the reverse light and installed in the default reverse camera position on the back door.

Final Installation of the New Head Unit

Connect all the plugs and install the new unit in the designated position. Once connected, the unit should work.

Improvement Needed

One improvement required is adjusting the position of the reverse camera. The default position does not align correctly, causing the reverse lines on the camera feed to be inaccurate. Adjusting the camera position will ensure the reverse lines are correctly displayed.
